Whether you just started the hobby or have an existing coin collection, there are many ways to acquire new goods. Old and rare coins, as well as ones with defects, may even hold value. While a dealer will have many authenticated rare pieces, here are some other areas to explore for treasures.

How to Find More Coins for Your Collection

1. Search Sales

Estate sales, garage sales, and flea markets can have new items for your coin collection. For example, sellers may have old and rare coins in bulk packages. Also, sort through antique boxes, clothing, furniture, and anywhere else coins may have fallen or have been stored and forgotten for years. We have had coins come into the shop right here in Greensboro that were worth OVER $40,000!          

2. Use a Metal Detector

Purchase a metal detector with a medium-sized coil to find buried coins. Some models have target identification displays that outline what has been located so you don’t have to dig unnecessarily.

Check parks and beaches for hidden treasures. Keep in mind that the activity is prohibited in certain public areas, and others require you to have a special permit.

3. Buy Coin Rolls

A bank can sell you rolls of coins for cash. Since so many filter in and out of financial institutions, there’s a chance that you might uncover vintage or rare coins. If you’re lucky, you might receive a roll filled with goods that have sat at the bank for some time.  Especially when Half Dollars come into the bank in bulk.  Speak to the head teller and see if you can arrange to get a call if they ever have someone come in with a hoard of old halves!  Don’t forget, halves are worth more than face value ALL THE WAY UP TO 1970!

Most larger cities have coin shows yearly.  Locally, in North Carolina, and the southern part of Virginia, there are quite a few shows during the year.  You can find a list at www.coinzip.com and possibly at www.ncna.club .  Most of the local shows have been put on hold due to the Coronavirus this year, but look to early 2021 for a fresh schedule.
