Most homeowners know very little about their water wells, besides the fact that they provide clean drinking water. Fortunately for residents of eastern Connecticut, Dalmik Well Drilling knows everything about water wells, from well deepening to pump installation and service.

Here’s a quick explanation of four different types of water wells:

  • Dug Wells: This is a shallow well that doesn’t allow much protection against water contamination. The hole, which is a little more than two-feet wide, is usually dug manually or with basic excavation equipment.

  • Bored Wells: These are created with an earth auger and encased in concrete. Although they run deeper than dug wells, they are still open to contamination. Another negative feature of shallow wells is that they dry up quickly during drought season.
  • Driven Point (Sand Point) Wells: These wells are dug using long lengths of pipe that are constructed below the ground. The have a diameter of 2-inches or less and run less than 50 feet deep. They are most appropriate in areas where the ground is sandy or contains looser soil. While they still have a degree of risk, it is easier to protect the water supply with a driven point well than a dug well.
  • Drilled Wells: These wells are the safest of the four options when it comes to maintaining a safe water supply. Drilled wells are often used on farms, where irrigation is vital to growing crops and providing hydration to livestock.
