If you’re unable to support yourself financially—whether due to your age or disability—you won’t be left on your own. Luckily, Social Security and Social Security disability benefits provide a safety net. If these payments aren’t enough, you may qualify for supplemental security income on top of them. Here’s a closer look at this program, so you can decide whether or not to apply.

What Is Supplemental Security Income?

Supplemental Security Income is separate from both standard Social Security and Social Security disability benefits. This program routes funds to those who are disabled or elderly and are relatively low on income and assets. SSI benefits began in 1972, and they’re funded by general revenue instead of payroll taxes.

This year, SSI benefits are capped at a maximum of $783 per month for individual applicants, and $1,175 for eligible couples. This is crucial for recipients who may be retired or unable to work and need additional money to cover their necessities.

The funds may be used for expenses from groceries and utilities to medical supplies, and they arrive on the first of every month. If you’re continuing to receive other forms of income or federal aid, or if you have someone to take care of you, your benefits may be reduced.

Who Is Eligible?

Social security disabilityThe majority of people who qualify for supplemental security income have a diagnosed disability that prevents them from working, such as blindness or paralysis. However, the program is also open to elderly individuals who are unable to work.

Since Social Security and Social Security disability benefits are already available to these people, SSI benefits are reserved for those who also have limited income and assets. More specifically, applicants must have no more than $2,000 in assets each, or $3,000 as a couple.
