Your car depends on a variety of fluids to keep itself running effectively. When any of these leak, you risk endangering the internal components of the vehicle and its overall smooth operation. At the first sign of a leak, protect your vehicle by scheduling prompt auto repair service. First, however, it can be helpful to understand some common auto fluids and how to spot leakage.

A Guide to Identifying Auto Fluid Leaks

1. Oil

Motor oil lubricates the engine and reduces friction within its various working parts. When engine oil leaks, it’s either black or brown in color. You’ll usually find evidence of the leak on the ground underneath the engine.

If the oil is still hot from the running vehicle, it may have an acrid smell. Oil leaks can result from a broken valve, seal, gasket, or oil pan. Because the engine needs oil to run efficiently, always have an oil leak fixed by an auto repair professional right away. If the leak seems major, have your car towed instead of trying to drive it to the mechanic.

2. Brake Fluid

Brake fluid is a hydraulic solution that transfers force into pressure so that the brakes can bring the vehicle to a stop on demand. Brake fluid can range in color from nearly transparent to yellow or brown, and it will be visible on the ground under the brake lines, rotors, drums, or master cylinder. A brake fluid leak is perhaps the most immediately dangerous of all the leaks on this list, so auto repair should be a priority.

3. Coolant

auto repairCoolant absorbs heat generated by the vehicle in order to keep the engine from overheating. Coolant leaks are unmistakable because of their bold colors, usually green, aqua, pink, or orange. The fluid also tends to have a sweet smell.

Since coolant can leak from a variety of places, it may be visible in puddles anywhere underneath the vehicle. Common causes of coolant leaks include a failing water pump, blown head gasket, faulty radiator cap, a loose clamp, or a leaky heater. To ensure the engine doesn't overheat, get a coolant leak repaired as soon as possible.

4. Transmission Fluid

Transmission fluid is a lubricant and a hydraulic solution that keeps the transmission system in working order and makes it possible to effortlessly switch gears. When it leaks, transmission fluid is brown or red and will appear on the ground under the front of the vehicle.

It may have a smell not unlike burnt toast. Don't wait to have this type of leak repaired, as doing so could seriously harm your transmission.
