Trees are living things and, as such, are unfortunately susceptible to disease. It can result from drought or other environmental factors, root or stem damage, or invasive pathogens. If a tree on your property clearly needs professional tree care, below are some do’s and don'ts of how to respond.

Do:

Erect a barrier.

A diseased tree could present a danger to others. It is likely not safe to climb. It might be in danger of toppling, or heavy limbs could fall and injure someone. Therefore, keep people away from it using Caution tape, cones and wiring, or a temporary metal fence. Make sure the barrier completely encircles the trunk and keeps passersby far enough away from the tree to reduce the risk of danger.

Investigate symptoms.

Look for bare branches or yellowing leaves during warm months and note how high up these branches are. Look for fungus, powdery mildew, black flowers or hard, gray growths. Note any symptoms to your tree care service so they can bring the appropriate equipment.

Don't:

Try to remove the tree yourself.

You may be tempted to topple the tree yourself and avoid the cost of tree care. Resist this temptation—even if you have experience cutting down trees—since felling the tree could be very dangerous. A hollow core could cause it to topple early or in the wrong direction. You could suffer serious injury or death, or the tree could fall onto a car, a nearby structure, or even your house.

Delay.

Don't wait more than a few days to address the problem of a diseased tree. The disease could spread to others nearby and worsen the issue. Moreover, a dying tree needs to be removed before it can fall under the weight of snow or the pressure of high winds. If it should topple because you delayed and injure someone or damage their property, you could face a serious liability lawsuit.
