Basements flood for many reasons. A pipe or water tank may burst, the sewer line may back up, or heavy rains or snowmelt might seep through the foundation. Whatever the reason, here’s how to take the right steps to protect your property and file an insurance claim.

What Should You Do If Your Basement Floods?

1. Shut Off Power

Water and electricity are a dangerous combination, so it's important to shut off power to the affected area as soon as possible. If you can access the breaker box safely, shut off the circuits powering the flooded rooms.

insuranceDo not walk through a flooded basement to reach the electrical box. If flooding has reached that area of the house, contact the electrical company and have them shut off power to the entire house temporarily until you can switch off the necessary circuits.

2. Remove Standing Water

It's imperative to remove the water quickly so that mold and algae don't have time to grow. You can get rid of a few inches of water from a flooded basement using a wet/dry vac.

You can get one at any home improvement store or from an equipment rental service. If the water is deeper than a few inches, contact a water damage restoration service for help, and ask your insurance agency if your policy covers the expense.

3. Dry Out the Dampness

Once you've removed the flood water, the area must be dried. Set up fans to blow across damp surfaces and heat lamps to evaporate the moisture.

Pay particular attention to drying carpet and upholstered furniture. These will likely need to be steam cleaned once they’re dry to remove light stains and musty odors.
