While it provides a considerable area, many people do not utilize the space in their attic. However, if you need a private office space, dream of the perfect game room, or want more space for your growing family, the attic is perfect for this role. Before embarking on your home remodeling project, you should prepare and plan thoroughly. Below are several strategies to help you throughout this process.

How to Prepare for an Attic Remodel

1. Investigate the Space

While the attic can add some much needed room to your home, it must meet specific design and building regulations before you complete any home remodeling projects. First, you should ensure the roofing structure uses rafters—rather than trusses—to support its weight.

There should also be at least 70 square feet of floor space that flows seven feet in every direction. Additionally, you need at least 50% of the room to have a height above 89 inches to provide sufficient comfort. An attic must also have an egress window to pass fire safety codes.

2. Reinforce the Floor

home remodelingA livable attic space should have a floor-load capacity of at least 30 pounds per square foot to handle people, animals, and moveable objects.

If yours currently does not, your home remodeling contractor must reinforce the joists with boards and constructed subfloor. However, this serves a dual purpose, as it allows you to customize the area to meet your needs, whether you want beautiful hardwood or soft, comfy carpet.

3. Install Safe Access

A pull-down ladder is not sufficient to pass building codes. Instead, there should be a staircase that has a minimum of 80 inches of headroom and 36 inches of width across the entire walking distance. It also needs treads that are at least 10 inches deep and risers that are more than 84 inches tall. This will ensure that everyone can safely and easily reach the room.
