When creating a custom T-shirt, where you place the graphic will establish the intent of your promotional apparel and help call attention to your brand. It shouldn’t be too low or too high, nor should it sit too far on either side. To position the graphic properly, here are some suggestions to keep in mind.

How to Position Graphics on Customized Shirts

1. Centered on the Chest

Centralized graphics command attention. A mid-size logo or slogan visible beneath an open jacket or sweater is ideal, as it won’t overwhelm the shirt’s front.

Place the graphic at least 3 to 4 inches from the collar. Center the artwork between the seams on the left and right for an even finish.

Remember that the graphic should be centered based on its overall dimensions, rather than the design elements. Create a frame that encompasses the highest, lowest, right-most, and left-most points to establish how much space the image occupies and where it will be centered on the shirt. Otherwise, the finished garment risks looking unbalanced.

2. Left on the Chest

Use the collar’s side as your guide to create a straight vertical line from top to the shirt’s bottom, then envision a horizontal line beginning at the seam of the armpit. The crosshairs of these lines point out the ideal spot for your logo.

If there’s a pocket, you can simply place the graphic in its center or directly above if it’s small enough.

3. Vertically on the Sleeve

Placing a vertical graphic can be tricky and is relatively uncommon, but this is an easy way to draw attention to your custom T-shirt design and add something new to your promotional apparel collection. It also provides great visibility if you’re passing out promotional items at events.

Create a visual center by drawing an imaginary line from the seam on the shoulder to the sleeve’s hem. Begin the design no more than 2 inches above a short sleeve’s hem.

4. Directly Under the Back Collar

Once a more atypical location for a graphic, the back collar now serves as a great spot for subtle branding. It’s best to place a simple logo here instead of anything too large or flashy. At the same time, avoid typography that’s too small and difficult to read. At a bare minimum, the graphic should be no more than 1.5 inches from the collar.
