When you're experiencing an impacted tooth, extreme decay, progressive gum disease, or overcrowding, tooth extraction may be necessary to restore your oral health and prevent additional issues. While dentists perform this restorative procedure routinely, it's natural to have concerns. Here are a few pre-visit tips to ensure you feel prepared and comfortable in the dental chair.

How to Prepare for a Tooth Extraction

1. Share Your Medical History

Before the appointment, discuss your medical history with your dentist. During this consultation, bring along medical records and discuss any prescription medications you're on. This will give your dental team a sound understanding of what forms of anesthesia or post-extraction pain medication they can prescribe.

2. Avoid Eating or Smoking

tooth ExtractionsUsing local anesthesia or nitrous oxide gas to minimize pain and reduce anxiety can make some patients feel slightly nauseous. With this in mind, do your best to avoid eating for the 12 hours leading up to your tooth extraction. To minimize the risk of dry socket, or a failure to develop a blood clot at the extraction site, you'll also need to refrain from smoking cigarettes at least 24 to 48 hours before your procedure and 48 to 72 hours afterward.

3. Arrange Transportation & Care

After tooth extraction, you may be disoriented due to laughing gas, local anesthesia, or mild swelling at the extraction point. To ensure you get home safely, arrange transportation in advance with a loved one. Make sure your friend or family member is able to help you get settled and can bring you soft foods, smoothies, or ice packs to soothe swelling and discomfort.

4. Take the Day Off

In the hours following your extraction, you'll need to swap gauze, take antibiotics, and follow your dentist's orders to promote fast healing. Besides taking care of your mouth, relaxing is encouraged, as physical exertion can cause added inflammation and discomfort. Before the appointment, rearrange your schedule so you can take the day off and recover comfortably at home.
