The goal of any home improvement project should be to create a more beautiful living space that is also more functional. If you have a family with four-legged members, one of the most practical updates you can make is adding easy-to-clean, scratch-resistant flooring. The guide below looks at certain materials you should consider.

What Are Animal-Friendly Flooring Options?

1. Tile

As lovable as pets are, they are known for creating messes. Spilled food, slobber, and "accidents" are all concerns. Tile flooring is stain-resistant so that you can remove the evidence of these incidents. These materials also don't scratch easily, so you don't have to stress about scuffs if your pup's nails get long.

If properly installed tile, flooring can last upwards of 80 years. To clean tiles, first sweep or vacuum up loose debris and then use a mild detergent and chamois-style mop to clean. To clean stone floors, use a pH-neutral detergent and a wet mop. The grout should be sealed at a minimum of every 5 years. If water soaks in and will not bead up when applied to the grout, then it’s time for a a good seal.

2. Engineered Hardwood

home improvementRegular hardwood floors aren't ideal for pets because they scratch and stain easily. However, engineered hardwood is tougher. It's made of several layers of pressed hardwood and plywood. Opt for boards containing Brazilian walnut, maple, or bamboo.

Engineered hardwood lasts from 40 to 80 years. To keep it clean, sweep or vacuum up dust and debris and then use a dry microfiber mop. Use a slightly damp mop to enhance the shine once you’re done.

3. Luxury Vinyl

In addition to being scratch- and water-resistant, luxury vinyl (LVT, LVP) is softer than stone or tile. This makes it very durable, as it’s unlikely to crack. It’s also more comfortable for pets with joint issues to lay down on. In many instances, it can be made to mimic the look of more expensive materials.

A well-maintained vinyl floor can last 20 or more years. Use a dry microfiber mop for day-to-day cleaning. Once a week, wet mop with a microfiber mop and a product designed for vinyl flooring. Rinse it afterward since soap overuse will create buildup and cut down on shine.
