When a lightbulb in your home burns out, you might head to the nearest hardware store in search of a standard, incandescent replacement. But as you approach the aisle, you’ll notice an overwhelming variety of options, all promising enhanced efficiency or longevity. Two of the most popular models are compact fluorescent lamps (CFL) and light emitting diodes (LED). If you’re not sure which one to use for your electrical work, read the following guide to learn more about these bulbs.

CFL Light Bulbs

These light bulbs look like thin tubes, curled into a spiral shape. While incandescent bulbs burn off 95% of their energy as heat, CFL bulbs release 80% as heat. When you flip the switch, it will take anywhere from three to 30 seconds for your CFL fixtures to turn on, as the electric current flows through the phosphor-coated tube.

On average, each bulb has a life span of around 10,000 hours. When you switch to CFLs from incandescent bulbs, you can save around 25% to 35% on energy consumption.

LED Light Bulbs

electrical workCompared to CFL and incandescent bulbs, LEDs are the most efficient. They come in a variety of shapes, and they generate light when electricity moves through a semiconductor. They also have a life span of around 25,000 hours.

When you switch to LED light bulbs, you can cut your energy consumption by around 75%. These light bulbs are also popular because they can produce the same number of lumens (or brightness) as CFLs, but with fewer watts. In other words, they need less energy to produce the same amount of light.
