Guacamole, a delicious avocado-based dip, has a rich and diverse history. A modern staple in Mexican food, it can be traced back to the 16th century when Aztecs made the dish with only smashed avocados. Today, it is a widely popular snack in Central and North America that’s enjoyed by millions of people. To learn more about the story behind this tasty treat, check out the brief history of guacamole below.

Where Did Guacamole Come From?

According to Mesoamerican mythology, the Toltec god Quetzalcoatl offered the recipe for guacamole to his people. It was then passed down through the generations.

The name guacamole comes from the Nahuati word, āhuacamolli, which directly translates to “avocado sauce.” Due to the high-fat content and nutritional density of avocados, guacamole was a popular Mesoamerican dish that rounded out the Aztecs' low-fat diets. It was also believed to be an aphrodisiac.

European colonists also greatly enjoyed guacamole and even tried to recreate the dish after they visited the west, but they didn't find much early success without avocados.

With the introduction of the Columbian Exchange, new ingredients and flavors were introduced to the dish, such as garlic and cumin from southern Asia and Europe, leading to the recipes for guacamole that are commonly made today.

While guacamole is commonly thought of as Mexican food, it has experienced a recent boom in popularity in America, resulting in an influx of avocados from Mexico to the U.S. It is one of the most widely eaten dishes during the Super Bowl and is a staple offered at many restaurants.
