Whether you’re moving or downsizing, it’s not always easy to keep your artwork on the walls. A storage unit is a perfect place to store these cherished possessions until you’re ready to hang them again. Sensitive items should be handled carefully to ensure they aren’t damaged. Below are several essential tips to follow while preparing art for storage.

How to Properly Store Artwork

1. Clean Thoroughly

Carefully clean the artwork to remove dust and other debris. Use a fine paintbrush on the surface of the canvas. Never use a feather-duster or stiff brushes since these can damage the canvas or snag and chip the paint. Avoid household cleaners and other cleaning materials as well.

Next, wipe wood and metal frames with a microfiber cloth to remove dust and oils. Then, carefully apply a wood polish and seal to protect the frame further. Touch the painting with your skin as little as possible throughout the process. You’ll prevent impact smudges or depositing dirt, cosmetics, and oils from your skin onto the canvas.

2. Wrap, Pad, & Pack

Next, cover the entire piece in cushioning material or padding to prevent impact damage. You can then fit cuts of hardboard on either side of the piece. However, custom art may not fit into a box, so wrap it in a heavy moving blanket.

Don’t risk rolling up unframed art because creases can form. Instead, place it between two foam boards and wrap it in glassine, an air- and water-resistant material. Add an outer layer of hardboard for total coverage.

3. Place It in the Unit Carefully

Do not store artwork on the floor since concrete storage unit floors may absorb moisture over time and transfer it to the packaging. Lay down several wood pallets, or better, hang shelving. Lay the art on a flat surface when possible, but never stack items. When storing vertically, ensure nothing is resting against the art and that there’s no risk of it falling over.

Climate-controlled storage units are preferred since they can maintain a constant temperature and include ventilation. Artwork does best in a stable, dry environment, so rent these units if available.
