An electric scooter is a fun toy for children, but it is also a complex piece of machinery. That means there are many reasons that it may stop working correctly. Luckily, many of these problems can be fixed easily, especially if you know what’s causing the malfunction. From failing scooter batteries to issues with the motor, this guide covers the most common problems users experience.

What’s Wrong With My Electric Scooter?

1. Brakes Aren’t Working

The brake lever switch is connected to the throttle system, and when it is activated, it shuts off the throttle and slows the scooter down. When there is a problem with the switch, the device won’t come to a stop when applying pressure to the brakes.

Most often, this is the result of a loose connection between the brake switch and the throttle system. Once the connection is restored, full functionality will return.

2. Scooter Won’t Move

If the motor turns on, but the scooter won’t move when the accelerator is pushed, there is a problem with the power transmission system. The most likely culprit is a loose or misaligned belt.

The transmission belt naturally wears down through regular usage, so it needs to be replaced once every 12 months or so. If there are no problems with the belt, but the wheels still don’t spin, the clutch is likely failing and needs to be repaired.

3. Short Run Time

Scooter BatteriesWhen the scooter battery starts to fail, the device runs slower and dies quicker. If it won’t charge at all, try a different charger to ensure that’s not the issue.

A battery that charges but still dies quickly might simply be too old. They are designed to last between 2 and 4 years before they lose the ability to hold a charge. Replacing the old one with a new installation should solve this problem.

4. It Runs Erratically

An electric scooter that suddenly cuts off intermittently likely has a problem with the wiring connecting the battery and motor. The wires can be jarred loose through regular usage, or the connectors can become caked in dirt and grime.

Both issues prevent the battery from providing the device with a consistent supply of power, which causes it to shut down randomly.

5. Tires Are Flat

Sometimes the tires are punctured by debris while riding the scooter. That causes them to lose the air inside. The deflation can happen within seconds or over the course of days, depending on the size of the puncture. Keep the tires protected by applying a liquid latex sealant and staying alert while riding to avoid debris.
