Household appliances are meant to make your life easier, but the common myths associated with them do the opposite. While some myths are easy to dispel, others can cause unexpected damage. Knowing facts from fiction is an easy way to save money and avoid needing premature appliance repairs

Debunking Misconceptions About Appliances

1. More Detergent Means Cleaner Clothes

It’s easy to believe more laundry detergent will result in cleaner clothes, but in truth, this can have the opposite effect. Excessive detergent can leave stains and residue on clothes.

Even more damaging, excess detergent suds can add resistance to a washing machine’s motor, forcing it to work harder. Increased wear and tear on the motor reduces performance and will result in the need for washer repair.

2. Rinse Before Using the Dishwasher

appliance repairThe “pre-rinse” is a standard but unnecessary routine for many dishwasher owners. Dishwashers are made to remove the dirt and grime off your dishes, just like the detergent. When dishes are pre-rinsed, there’s little for your detergent to break down–this can result in detergent buildup and unwanted residue on your dishes.

If the dishwasher is not fully cleaning your dishes without the pre-rinse routine, you may have a clog or be in need of appliance repair.

3. Garbage Disposals Need Hot Water

A common garbage disposal myth involves using hot water to help flush down food. While cold water actually helps, hot water can create problems for your disposal and pipes. Hot water keeps fats and oils in liquid form while going through the disposal–these are then left to cool and solidify in your pipes later on. Over time, the buildup will result in clogged pipes and require maintenance.

4. Microwaves Are Harmful

For decades, many people refuse to stand in front of the microwave while it’s on for fear of harmful radiation. Though radiation is used to heat your food by targeting water molecules, it’s confined only within the microwave.

It is possible for radiation to escape through faulty door-seals, so keeping up with microwave maintenance is important. But well-maintained microwaves won’t emit radiation on anything but your food.
