Whether you’re in the mood for high-speed racing or a leisurely day on the water, personal watercraft (PWC) like modern Jet Skis® can accommodate all interests. Yamaha’s® WaveRunner™ has been an industry standard since its introduction. If you’re searching for a reliable vehicle to meet your personal or family needs on the water, consider this cutting-edge watercraft.

What Is a WaveRunner?

The WaveRunner was introduced as the new, better functioning personal watercraft in 1986. Original PWC like Jet Skis were designed exclusively for solo riders to operate while standing up. However, the WaveRunner became the PWC of the future. Whether for racing, luxury rides, or tours, this vehicle remains the go-to option for water enthusiasts.

Creating the Modern WaveRunner

Yamaha’s WaveRunner remains one of the most desirable Jet Ski options on the market. Yamaha immediately took the fast, sporty image of the traditional Jet Ski and created a multi-purpose PWC.

By 1990, the WaveRunner included a line of family-focused, multi-passenger models. The mid-1990s saw all WaveRunners receive engine upgrades and better turn performance, including the addition of the V-shaped hull you may recognize as today’s standard.

Yamaha continually valued the WaveRunner’s use as a water-sport vehicle. In the late 90s, the PWC was given increased power and modified for long-distance riding. By 2004, Yamaha perfected the 4-stroke engine design in their Jet Skis, creating models designed for powerful wave riding.

By the end of the decade, the WaveRunner became one of the world’s lightest PWC, thanks to their NanoXcel™ lightweight frame. In 2012, three new models were released; they were adjusted to fit a standard of comfortable but “race-ready” vehicles.

Today’s WaveRunner

In the last five years, Yamaha developed state-of-the-art dual-control handlebars for maximum vehicular control. WaveRunners were also given new boat control units  catering to the type, weight, and handling for every unique model.

After 2016, each year released new models designed for either sport or leisure. The most recent models come equipped with revolutionary tech improvements: accessory mounts, touch screen interfaces, and even self-draining footwells. 2021 will combine performance, comfort, and value with the release of six new WaveRunner models, including the SuperJet™, a homage to the early stand-up variants.
