A sapling requires different care from all the other established trees in your yard. Once you have planted a new addition, learn how to provide the best tree care and what common mistakes to avoid to help it build a strong foundation.

Do:

Water generously.

A young tree needs a lot of water to compensate for the stress of the new environment and help it take root. Schedule a deep watering every day for the first two weeks. Afterward, water once a week.

Use a hose, as automated lawn sprinklers won’t provide enough water and will dampen the trunk, leaving it susceptible to disease.

Stake it if needed.

Most new trees don’t need stakes. However, if yours can’t seem to stand up straight or must withstand extreme winds, stakes can help hold it in place.

Place two stakes opposite each other on either side of the tree, outside of the root ball. Secure them to the trunk with canvas, cloth, or rubber. These ties should be secure but not any tighter than needed to keep it in place. A little bit of swaying will encourage the tree to grow stronger roots so it can stand up on its own after a year.

Don’t:

Over-mulch.

tree careMulching is an essential part of young tree care; it will keep out weeds and lock moisture in the roots. However, many beginners use too much.

Don’t dump so much at the base that it piles against the trunk. This will leave the tree susceptible to pest infestations and disease.

Instead, apply two to four inches of organic mulch one to two inches away from the trunk. The mulch should extend far enough to cover the ground beneath the tree’s crown.

Prune the tree.

Skip pruning in the first year. The tree needs to become established with unhindered growth, and pruning can leave open sores that will invite pests. After the initial year, conduct your first pruning during the dormant season.
