If you find water dripping out of your AC, don’t ignore the issue. While some condensation leakage is normal when temperatures are high, large puddles typically signal the need for speedy AC repair. Learn about some of the most common causes of leaks so you can schedule timely assistance.

Why Is Your Air Conditioner Leaking?

1. Broken Drain Pan

As the evaporator coils in your AC extract heat from the air, condensation forms on them. The drain pan collects excess condensation to prevent water damage. Over time, the drain pan may become corroded and develop cracks and leaks. Fortunately, it’s easy to replace a faulty drain pan.

2. Clogged Air Filter

AC repairThe filter in your air conditioner catches particles, like dust and pollen, to prevent them from being dispersed around your home. When the air filter becomes bogged down with debris, it can no longer do its job. It will also block air flow over the evaporator coils, which causes them to freeze. When the unit is shut off, the coils will thaw and leak water inside your home.

Change the air filter at least every three months—or sooner if you have pets or someone in your home has allergies.

3. Cracked or Clogged Condensate Drain Line

The condensate line in your AC extends from the indoor air handler to the outdoor condenser. If there are obvious cracks or other defects in the drain line, that is most likely the cause of leaks. However, the drain line can also become clogged with debris, which causes water to flow in the wrong direction, back into your home. In this case, the clog will need to be removed to ensure optimal function.
