When someone who has served in the military passes away, the funeral will typically look a bit different than it would for non-military personnel. The military is filled with tradition, and these customs extend to funeral arrangements. The following arrangements are generally used for all services for active members, as well as individuals who retired or were honorably discharged.

What Are Some Military Funeral Traditions?

1. Flag-Draped Casket

funeralFor a military funeral, the casket will be draped with the American flag. This draws on wartime traditions from the late 18th century, when flags would cover fallen soldiers as they were removed from the battlefield.

2. 21-Gun Salute

After the casket arrives at the gravesite, the American flag is lifted from the casket by the honor guard. Seven military service members will then fire three volleys in what has become known as the 21-gun salute. This custom also draws from battlefield tradition, in which the firing of three volleys would indicate that each side in a battle was ready to resume fighting after caring for their dead and wounded.

The full 21-gun salute is reserved for presidents and other high-ranking individuals. However, a rifle volley can be performed for lower-ranking military members if the honor guard company has the resources. If you're making funeral arrangements for a former servicemember, ask if this is an option.

3. Taps

Finally, the song “Taps” is played on a bugle or by electronic means as the casket is lowered. The American flag is folded and presented to the family of the deceased. The honor guard is required by law to provide both services at the family's request.

“Taps” originated during the Civil War as a signal for lights out at the end of the day. It has since come to symbolize a deceased military service member figuratively going to sleep.
