The roof is your house's first line of defense against the elements. If your roof shingles are no longer providing the needed protection, it may be time for a roof replacement. While many homeowners opt for asphalt when getting a new roof, they may not be aware that there are multiple types of this material to consider. The guide below looks at just some of them.

A Guide to Asphalt Roof Shingles

1. 3-Tab

Also known as "strip" shingles, these are the most basic and affordable type. They are composed of a single layer of asphalt with perforations that create three tabs of about 12 inches long. They are lightweight, inexpensive, and rated to withstand winds of between 60 and 70 miles per hour. Before the 1980s produced alternatives, these were the standard.

2. Architectural

Architectural, or dimensional, roof shingles are the most common type of asphalt roof covering on the market today. They feature multiple layers fused together to give them a feeling of depth or dimension. This makes them stronger than 3-Tab and gives them a wind speed rating of up to 130 mph.

3. Luxury

4. Interlocking

These are typically used only in regions known for extremely high winds. This can be useful in Nebraska, one of the states with the highest tornado rates in the country. However, they are not particularly more durable than dimensional shingles.

They come not as perforated strips but rather as individual shingles with interesting, non-rectangular patterns, such as diamonds and waves, that are unavailable in other styles.
