If you own a reef fish tank, you already know how important it is to keep it healthy so that its inhabitants thrive. Routine maintenance is the best way to improve the habitat and ensure the fish remain in top shape. Here’s how to keep your aquarium fish healthy and avoid a trip to the veterinarian.

How to Care for a Saltwater Aquarium

1. Perform Weekly Water Quality Tests

Check the salinity, pH, and water hardness of your saltwater tank weekly, and monitor the ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate levels, too. The specific levels for each may depend on the fish species living in your tank, so consult with a veterinarian when establishing the tank.

As a general rule, saltwater aquariums need a pH between 7.6 and 8.4. Test kits can be purchased at pet stores and through veterinarians, or you can have the water tested at either place.

2. Change the Water Twice a Month

veterinarian-lincoln-neWater changes are necessary twice a month, but you should always preserve 20% of the tank volume when you replace the water. Start by preparing the new saltwater at least 24 hours ahead of time, ensuring its salinity matches the existing salinity of the tank. Too much or too little salt can contribute to increased stress and dissolved oxygen for the fish.

3. Keep the Tank Equipment Clean

At least four times a year, or once every three months, disassemble your tank's protein skimmer and aquarium filter to clean and test they’re working correctly. Space out the cleaning of key equipment so that it's not all done at the same time. Sterilizing too much of your tank at once can affect the water chemicals and endanger the fish.
