Residential roofing systems are complex structures. Each component plays a significant role in its strength and stability. Understanding the general makeup of your roof can make it easier for you to recognize when you may need to consider repairs or even a replacement. Here’s everything you need to know.

Core Components of the Roofing System

1. Decking

Roof installation begins with decking, or the primary piece on which all other components are placed. It has to be strong enough to support the weight, which is why materials like plywood and engineered waferboard are traditionally used.

2. Underlayment

Over the decking is the underlayment, which is either resistant to water or completely waterproof. Its key purpose is to prevent water damage, especially in the event that shingles tear off the roof and leave spots of the surface unprotected. It also safeguards the shingles from heat that may emanate from a poorly ventilated, warm attic below. Typically, roofing contractors use felt paper for the underlayment.

3. Soffit

residential roofingThink of the soffit as a transitional piece. It fills the overhanging space between the roof and the siding, and is designed to minimize issues like water damage and heat accumulation in the attic. It also creates a barrier that prevents potential pest infestations.

4. Fascia

Fascia board is installed horizontally above the soffit along the edge of your residential roofing system. This component serves as a barrier, too, preventing moisture damage to the roof and even the home’s interior, and also creating additional support for the gutter system. It even contributes to your home’s curb appeal by creating a smooth, cohesive look.

5. Drip Edge

Drip edges are also known as flashing. Made with aluminum, this component is placed along the sides of the roof and below the underlayment. Its primary purpose is to prevent water accumulation by channeling it safely to the gutters. This can prevent leaking roof problems and other issues associated with moisture intrusion.

6. Shingles

The most obvious visible parts of the residential roofing system are the shingles. Installers offer a variety of styles and colors to complement all architectural types. More than just versatile, they’re highly cost-effective and simple to maintain. They can also replicate other, more costly materials, like clay and cedar shakes, allowing you to achieve the look you desire.
