As cold weather sets in and you prepare your home for holiday guests, the last issue you’ll want to deal with is unreliable indoor heating. There are several potential issues you might experience with your furnace, but fortunately, you can fix many minor problems on your own. Here are a handful of common heater repairs, troubleshooting methods, and the HVAC parts you’ll need.

4 Common Furnace Repairs & Upkeep Tasks

1. Change Filters

Filters remove dust, pollen, and pet dander from the air before they enter the unit, warm up, and circulate indoors. Saturated filters cause furnaces to use more power to pull air, which elevates energy bills. Once a month, replace the filter in the blower compartment. Note the dimensions along the filter edges so you’ll know the correct size for the replacement.

2. Swap Out the Thermostat

HVAC partsFrequent and infrequent cycling are signs of a faulty thermostat. Upgrade to a programmable version that allows for remote control and customized operation schedules.

Power down the furnace, and then remove the old thermostat with a screwdriver. Label the wires with tape so you’ll know which screw-terminals they correspond with. Mount the new thermostat base, thread the wires through the proper terminals, and screw in the control unit before turning on the power.

3. Protect Ventilation Pipes

Vent pipes are about two to three inches across, allowing leafy debris and insect nests to block airflow. Find these curved PVC pipes near the foundation or roof of your furnace’s exterior wall, and check them for obstructions every couple of weeks. Call an HVAC company to remove blockages. Measure the exact pipe diameter, and order mesh screen caps you can attach to prevent clogs.

4. Trip the Circuit Breaker

If your furnace stops functioning or the thermostat screen goes blank, there may be a tripped breaker or blown fuse. Replace it with a three to five amp fuse, or flip the breaker switch associated with your heating system. If problems persist, make sure the furnace is securely plugged into the wall.
