Aluminum fencing will not rust like other metal materials since it doesn't contain enough iron for this reaction; however, it is not impervious to oxidation. It forms aluminum oxide in response to moisture, which leaves a gray or white powdery substance on the fence. Here, review tips for protecting your system from this phenomenon.

How to Prevent Corrosion on Aluminum Fencing

1. Keep It Clean

Clean your aluminum fencing with soap and water two to four times a year depending on factors such as location, environment, and proximity to road dust and debris. Allowing dirt, dust, and other organic materials to coat the fence can trap moisture to promote corrosion.

Use a pressure washing device to blast away dirt and grime efficiently. Mild dish detergent is better than cleansers with solvents and petroleum chemicals that damage the powder coating. Dry the fencing thoroughly with a clean towel to avoid leaving water or soapy residue that contributes to corrosion.

2. Perform Regular Inspections

Spot clean the stains by soaking them in a solution made of two tablespoons of white vinegar per quart of water. The mixture loosens the deposits; use the jet adjustment on your garden hose to complete the removal process. Again, ensure you dry the fencing completely before moving on to any other aluminum oxide stains.

3. Schedule Powder Coating

Aluminum and other metal fences have a powder coating that helps protect the material from nicks, scratches, and corrosion. This will need to be reapplied regularly. If your fence is unpainted, you can wait longer between appointments, since the product would have been able to bond directly to the metal instead of covering its surface. However, dirt and grime accelerate its wear. While it depends on environmental factors, typically, you should have it re-powdered every six months.
