Distracted driving is any behavior that takes your attention away from the road. In a single year, distracted driving accidents account for a staggering 391,000 car injuries. Given the seriousness of this issue, all drivers should avoid distractions as much as possible. Here are a few tips to help you protect yourself and others on the road.

How to Prevent Distracted Driving

1. Make Your Cellphone Inaccessible

Using a cellphone while driving causes around 1.6 million crashes every year. While on the road, keep yours securely tucked away in a spot where it won't disturb you. This might be in a purse or other bag, in the glove compartment, or on the backseat.

Shut off the phone beforehand or silence all ringers and notifications. If you absolutely must make or receive calls during a drive, minimize the chances of car injuries by using a hands-free device.

2. Preset Music & Temperature Controls

Turn on the heat or air conditioner as needed before putting the car in drive, and acquaint yourself beforehand with the switches on your car's climate control system. This way, you can quickly adjust the temperature as needed throughout the trip without having to take attention off the road.

3. Institute Quiet Rules

It's much easier to lessen distractions when there aren't other people in the vehicle. For families, especially those with young children, avoiding distractions can be a bigger challenge.

Try instituting "quiet rules" that every member of the family understands and follows. For instance, when the key is in the ignition, talk is kept to a minimum, passengers use their inside voices, and there is no roughhousing or fighting. Also, bring along items that will keep little ones quiet and occupied, such as books, toys, or smart devices.
