U.S. war veterans are honored for the rest of time for their service. Many families choose traditional veterans’ memorial headstones or medallions for their loved ones. Veterans Affairs has specific guidelines. The following are all the details to ensure you receive the grave marker you prefer.

Your Guide to Veteran Grave Markers

1. Headstones

headstone phoenixVeterans Affairs furnishes and delivers headstones for veterans serving before September 7, 1980. Veterans serving after who have passed qualify if they served at least 24 months or died in active duty. National Guard members may receive a headstone if they were entitled to retirement pay upon passing or served in a federal status for a designated time.

The headstone includes the veteran’s legal name, service branch, and birth and death years. Families may be able to include their highest rank, awards and service, and nickname.

2. Flat Markers

Flat markers are small plaques set against the ground. Veterans Affairs will craft these for the same individuals who qualify for headstones. Markers come in bronze, granite, or marble. Families won’t be able to inscribe as much because of the plaque’s small size. These, however, are perfect for smaller cemetery plots or can be installed alongside an existing private headstone for the deceased.

3. Medallions

Veterans Affairs has several requirements for medallions. The veteran must have been honorably discharged, served on or after April 6, 1917, and passed on or after November 1, 1990. They must also be buried in a private cemetery with a privately purchased headstone or grave marker.

Veterans serving after September 7, 1980, and buried in a private cemetery with a privately purchased marker must have served at least 24 months or died during active duty.

Medallions are bronze. If the veteran received the Medal of Honor, they may qualify for a Medal of Honor medallion. These can be installed on any headstone or marker. The medallion is inscribed with “VETERAN” and the branch of service.
