While some people choose to keep a loved one’s ashes in an urn after cremation, others prefer to scatter them. This can make for a beautiful memorial service that allows friends and family to reflect on the deceased while offering support to one another. Here are some ideas for appropriate locations.

Where Can You Release Your Loved One's Ashes?

1. Over Water

Scattering ashes at sea is popular. However, you might be too far from an ocean to make this feasible. As an alternative, many families choose a local body of water close to the deceased’s home. Water-soluble scattering urns are often used to drop the ashes into the water.  However, you do not have to use a water-soluble urn to scatter the ashes in the water; rather, you can simply scatter them as close as you can into the water by hand. Check what laws apply in your area.

2. In a Garden

cremationGardens can provide a peaceful location for scattering a loved one’s ashes—particularly if they were a fan of horticulture. Many cemeteries have special gardens designated for this purpose. Alternatively, distribute the ashes over your garden at home. Looking out your window will then remind you of your loved one.

3. At a Significant Location From Their Life

Did your loved one always visit a particular park or place they loved to go to? Do you know the spot where they proposed or had their wedding? These favorite places may be a meaningful resting place for them. Some people even fly with cremated remains to their loved one's favorite vacation spot.

However, with all these options, check applicable rules. For public property, research local and state regulations before going forward. For private property, talk to the owner to request permission. If traveling by plane, you must bring the remains in a carry-on bag that can be X-rayed.
