If you’re missing teeth, your dentist may recommend dentures as a solution. While dental prosthetics were limited in the past, recent advancements have provided patients with a wider range of options. For instance, you can choose between traditional and implant-supported dentures to restore the look and function of your smile.

Traditional

Traditional dentures are composed of porcelain and an acrylic base to mimic the look of natural teeth. They’re custom-designed to fit each individual patient to ensure optimum function and comfort. Denture adhesive is typically used to keep the prosthesis in place when talking or eating.

One big benefit of traditional dentures is that they don’t require surgery. Following an oral exam, your dentist will create a mold of your mouth to make the prosthesis to your exact specifications.

Acclimating to them can take a while and produce some initial discomfort. They can also rub against the gums and cause irritation, even slipping out of place if you’re not careful. Their average life span is around 10 years, so you’ll need periodic replacements.

Implant-Supported

denturesAn implant-supported dental prosthesis is permanently affixed to your mouth via metal rods. These rods are implanted into the jawbone, establishing a sturdy foundation for your dentures to attach to and eliminating the need for the acrylic base and adhesive.

The implant support prevents a lot of the issues experienced with a traditional prosthesis, such as slippage and gum irritation. Implants also prevent the loss of bone tissue in the jaw, as the metal rods stimulate bone growth and prevent recession.

Unlike a traditional dental prosthesis, implants require surgery. Additionally, not everyone is a good candidate for implants. You must have healthy jawbone tissue to support the implant, and if you don’t, you may require an additional bone graft procedure. When it comes to dental care, implant-supported dentures can be brushed just like natural teeth.
