Since the COVID-19 outbreak first began, officials in Connecticut have aggressively tried to prevent infections in the state’s correctional facilities. Thanks to more arrestees posting bail, hundreds of prisoners being released, and an effective test-and-quarantine program, Connecticut’s inmate population actually has a lower rate of infection than the general population. Below is a brief overview of how inmates in Connecticut are rested and quarantined.

The Positivity Rate Among Connecticut Inmates

According to the Connecticut Department of Correction, there are currently non-symptomatic patients in state prisons, and only 11 staff members are currently recovering. The correctional system also counts eight inmates who have tested positive but aren’t displaying any symptoms.

Throughout the pandemic, a total of 1,558 inmates have tested positive, all but seven of whom have recovered. These numbers may be due to the proactive testing program implemented across the state and fewer people coming into the system.

Testing in Connecticut Prisons

Anyone who tests positive is immediately taken to a medical isolation area, where they’ll stay for two weeks. Those who develop symptoms receive medical treatment, and those who don’t can return to their routines when the quarantine period has ended.

For those who test negative, their routines don’t change. Inmates also have the right to refuse the test, but those who do will be treated like asymptomatic carriers. This group is sent to a quarantine area, separate from those who tested positive, where they will be held for two weeks.
