This school year is unlike any we’ve ever experienced. Children of all ages will need extra support from their parents to encourage dedication to their studies during online learning. While high school students may be more independent, they can still benefit from receiving help from their parents in the following ways.

5 Learning Distance Strategies to Help Your Student Succeed

1. Encourage a Daily Routine

Even if your student isn’t attending high school physically, maintaining a routine will help them stay on track. Make sure they get out of bed at the same time each day to ensure they have enough time to devote to their studies. Likewise, maintain the same lunchtime and end of the school day to promote a regular schedule.

2. Communicate With Teachers

If your child seems to be expressing frustration or confusion over a particular subject, reach out to their teacher or guidance counselor for suggestions. They may recommend additional material you can study with your student or helpful resources, such as practice quizzes. Just keep in mind that teachers may be facing more requests than normal, so responses could be slightly delayed.

3. Provide a Space Conducive to Learning

Parents may also be working from home, and there could be several children in the household participating in distance learning. As much as possible, set up areas where pets, siblings, and you won’t interrupt studies. Allow your child to work in a well-lit area with plenty of work space, such as a dining room table.

4. Grant Your Student Independence

It can be tempting to sit in on classes to ensure everything is going smoothly. However, parents don’t have this opportunity in physical high school classes. To contribute to a sense of normalcy, give your child space and freedom while they’re learning from a distance. But you can still offer support if it’s requested, such as going over flashcards before a big test.

5. Touch Base Regularly

Even if your child has always excelled in school and is usually self-sufficient, these new circumstances may require an adjustment period. To ensure your child is feeling confident in their school work, check in with them daily. Ask about your student’s schedule for the day, whether they’re staying on track, and what they need from you.
