Many people think fall is too late to start an asphalt paving project; however, this is a common misconception. While working in the spring and summer is preferred, it’s possible to pour hot asphalt during autumn. The guide below explains why this season is an ideal time to start a project and what to expect during yours.

Why You Should Perform Paving in the Fall

Take Advantage of the Temperature

For hot asphalt to compact and set properly, it must maintain an internal temperature between 175 and 275 degrees Fahrenheit. If the temperature goes below this range, the material dries faster and loses structural stability. To avoid these issues, the outdoor weather should be at least 70 degrees or hotter.

This means you can complete paving projects well into the fall in most areas in New York. If you miss this window, you’ll need to wait until spring to pour the mix.

Avoid Damage From Cold Weather

pavingIf you want to re-pour asphalt on an existing surface, doing it before the first frost will prevent winter damage. Melted snow and ice can seep into existing cracks, then expand when they freeze. This will stress the material and cause significant internal damage. By repaving the surface in the fall, you’ll fortify it for the cold weather ahead.

What to Expect During a Paving Project

The crew will use heavy machinery, like forklifts and dump trucks, to  break down and remove the existing material. After grading and sloping the surface, they’ll install a sub-base to protect the asphalt from freezing and thawing during the cold months. A binding agent is poured over the base; then hot asphalt is applied and rolled. While it’s safe to walk on the new installation immediately after it’s rolled, you should avoid parking on it for 24 to 48 hours.
