Whether you’re looking at crops, livestock, or machinery, every aspect of a farm has to be prepared for winter. Time is often of the essence, and taking the right steps ensures your farm equipment and property will be ready for spring. Below are several helpful tips to use.

How to Start Getting the Farm Ready for Winter

1. Stock Up on Cold-Weather Items

Freezing temperatures aren’t that common in the South, but the cold can still take a toll. For this reason, purchase all your cold-weather products now. Insulate water troughs and irrigation pipes in case a cold snap comes early. Repair cracks in animal pens, and invest in heaters to keep them comfortable.

If you plan on using your tractor, install a weather brake around the seat to keep you warm, and check antifreeze levels so engines won’t have trouble in the cold. Consider purchasing a backup generator as well. These will power animal pens and work areas if a winter storm knocks the electricity out.

2. Prep the Soil & Plant for Spring

Active farms may want to plant winter grains to protect the soil from erosion or spread mulch across smaller plots to keep plant roots warm. Remember to prune your fruit trees to promote early spring growth, and consider planting trees and perennials that will thrive during the winter.

3. Properly Clean & Store Farm Equipment

Deep-clean your facilities and all your farm equipment. You don’t want grime to build up in the gears and engines. Come spring, you may discover parts are worn or broken. Thoroughly clean animal pens, tools of all sizes, and landscaping equipment as well. These need to be stored in a dry place so that parts won’t rust.

It’s wise to schedule an inspection if you plan on using your tractor or other farm equipment throughout the cold season. Professionals will ensure parts are lubricated and free of wear that could keep them from performing.
