Often a corn starch- or rice starch-based formula, dry shampoo is used to combat greasiness between regular shampooing and cleansing treatments at the hair salon. How you apply the product can impact its effectiveness and the appearance of your locks. To keep grease at bay and your mane looking fabulous, here are the do’s and don’ts of using dry shampoo.

Do:

Concentrate on the roots.

Many dry shampoos come in powder form and are released through aerosol sprays. When spritzing the product, aim at the roots. This will stop sebum, the oil produced by the sebaceous glands, from generating at the roots and sliding down strands.

Massage it in.

hair salonTo ensure the dry shampoo does its job, massage it into the locks after spritzing. Start by working the solution into your scalp, then run your fingers through the roots. This helps your hair look as if you just got it washed at the hair salon.

Don’t:

Spray too close.

To ensure the dry shampoo reaches the roots, you may be tempted to spray near your head. However, doing this can cause the product to clump and form a residue that’s challenging to comb out. To prevent this issue, hold the aerosol bottle at least 12 inches away from your hair so that the mist can spread evenly.

Forget to shake the bottle.

If you’re using a starch-based dry shampoo, the particles can sink to the bottom of the bottle. This will compromise the effectiveness of the product. To maximize the formula’s ability, it needs to be shaken and mixed.
