1. Offer Plenty of Support

Being unprepared for a game is a recipe for stress, so do everything you can to provide the support your child needs to succeed. Practice their youth soccer skills with them during the week, encourage proper sleep habits, and help them to stay on top of their schoolwork.

Cook nutritious meals and prepare snacks for your child so they don’t have to play on an empty stomach. Offering support is a way to show your child how much you care, and it can make a big difference. 

2. Teach Relaxation Techniques 

youth soccerThere will always be times when games don’t go as planned. Your child may miss a goal, fall down, or experience unkind words from an opposing player. Since you can’t be on the field with them, teach your child relaxation techniques, such as deep breathing.

Teach them to ask for a sub when they need it, and to breathe deeply on the sidelines to lower their stress levels. You could also teach them to visualize their goals, relax their muscles, or grab a drink to have some time to calm down. 

3. Validate Their Feelings

Whether your child is stressed over how well they played, the shortcomings of their team, or mistakes they tend to make on the field, listen to your child and validate their feelings.

Explain that competitive sports are hard and that they are doing great. Tell them that it is normal to feel some stress and that their choice to play—or not to play— is completely in their hands.
