Homeowners looking to replace their residential roofing often choose tried-and-true asphalt, which is made of fiberglass. Typically, this material can last between 15 and 30 years with the proper maintenance, while also coming in a wide array of attractive colors. However, many are unaware that asphalt comes in several varieties. The guide below explores the differences between these three types.

A Guide to Different Kinds of Asphalt Shingles

1. 3-Tab

3-Tab asphalt shingles come in long strips with three uniform cutouts, which is where the name comes from. While 3-Tab shingles are available in several different shades, they don't come in as many shapes as their counterparts. Inexpensive yet durable, they usually need to be replaced every two decades.

2. Architectural

Angles built into architectural shingles make them stronger than 3-Tabs, while also lending a great deal of texture and visual interest to your roof.

They can usually last several hours before catching fire, unlike wood shakes. They also have decent resistance to impacts, such as those from hail.

3. Premium

Premium asphalt shingles, also called luxury shingles, are available in a range of shapes, sizes, colors, and designs. They can even mimic the look of high-end roofing materials like slate or wood shakes—but without the steep price tag.

While more expensive than 3-Tab and architectural shingles, premium asphalt shingles can last for several years more than them, and many carry lengthy manufacturer’s warranties. This is because they are made of several layers of asphalt to increase their weather resistance and insulative properties.
