Summer may have come and gone, but that doesn’t have to mean the end of your outdoor adventures. Fall is a great time to plan a camping trip, thanks to cooler weather and spectacular foliage and scenery. Before you head out on your autumn excursion, keep these tips in mind to stay safe and comfortable as you enjoy nature.

How to Prepare for a Fall Outdoor Adventure

1. Dress in Layers

Fall weather can be unpredictable, with big shifts in temperature throughout the day and overnight. Wearing layers of clothing, such as a long-sleeved T-shirt under a sweatshirt, on your outdoor adventures allows you to stay comfortable while being able to remove a layer during the warmest part of the day.

A wool cap and gloves are also a must. Don’t forget to pack extra socks and gloves so that you can change if they get wet.

2. Choose the Right Campsite

Find a campsite that offers some protection from the elements but also gets some morning sun. If possible, hang a tarp between two trees to provide some additional protection from wind and a dry place to eat if it rains. Don't neglect to secure your tent firmly in case it gets windy overnight.

3. Stay Warm All Night

Choosing a sleeping bag that’s rated for low temperatures is key to staying warm overnight on an outdoor adventure. Before turning in, eat a carb-heavy snack like trail mix or a granola bar.

Don’t forget to use the bathroom before you turn in. This reduces the odds that you’ll have to go out into the cold and lose all the warmth you’ve built up in your sleeping bag.

4. Prepare for Cooking

Doing some prep work before you leave home, like chopping veggies or preparing burgers, can save time. Bring an insulated cup and sip on hot tea or water with lemon first thing to warm up quickly.

5. Watch for Wildlife

Autumn is when wildlife starts the mating cycle and preparations for winter. This can make them more aggressive than usual. Take care to secure all food in a cooler—never inside your tent—and properly dispose of trash.

Never approach wild animals. Be sure to leave plenty of space between you and them, and practice the Leave No Trace principles before you pack up and head home. This will ensure a safe and tidy campsite for the next nature lovers.
