Mobility scooters allow the injured, elderly, and disabled to retain much of their independence, but only when the devices function as they should. Like all mechanical devices, mobility aids are vulnerable to wear and tear, which can cause issues over time. If you or someone you love relies on a scooter to get around, here are some of the most common problems and solutions you should be aware of.

3 Mobility Scooter Issues

1. Total System Failure

If your scooter won’t even turn on, it likely needs a new battery. Batteries lose their ability to hold a charge over time and eventually need to be replaced entirely. The newest scooter models typically alert you when the battery should be replaced, but you may have overlooked the warning.

To see if a dead battery is to blame, check the connections. If they’re secure, the charger is still in good working order, and the scooter still won’t start, the battery is most likely dead.

2. Jammed Ignition

Should this happen, it may be possible to remove the broken portion with a pair of sturdy tweezers. Otherwise, you can use pliers to turn what’s left of the key, thereby starting the ignition. This will allow you to continue using your scooter until you can take it in for repairs.

3. Locked Joystick

Modern scooters have digital components that rely on inputs, or codes, to perform the wanted functions. If your joystick is suddenly locked, you may have inadvertently input the code to lock it. Check the manual for the code to undo the lock. If that doesn’t work, have a seasoned technician diagnose and fix the problem.
