When you’ve found a favorite new craft beer at a local brewery, you may want to bring some of it home. Crowlers and growlers are both popular ways to buy and transport your brew selection. Understand the difference between the two to decide which you’d like to request.

Growlers

breweryA growler is a 64-ounce jug made of glass, stainless steel, ceramic, or plastic. The 64 ounces equals 1.89 liters or four pints of beer, which is about 10 ounces less than you would get in a six-pack of beer. They usually have a handle to make them easy to transport and pour.

A growler is a good choice if you’re planning on sharing it with some friends. The beer will go flat about 36 hours after the growler has been opened, so you’ll want to drink it quickly. It should be consumed fairly soon after bringing it home from the brewery, since the container isn’t designed for long-term storage. You can also wash out this container and bring it back to refill it in the future.

Crowlers

At half the size of a growler, a crowler is a 32-ounce aluminum can. These 32 ounces equal just under a liter (956 mL) or equal to 2 pints of beer. This contains twice the liquid of a regular beer can. These containers are a one-time purchase – they cannot be refilled.

A crowler is a great choice if you’d just like to drink the beer yourself at your convenience. The beer will last up to a month in the can as it is unopened, and the entire can should be drunk in a single sitting. Like any other beer can, the liquid will start to go flat as soon as it is opened.
