When you rely on a septic system for your wastewater collection, maintenance is critical to prolong the life of your septic tank and to prevent issues such as backups and leaks. It's especially vital to care for your system in the winter when freezing temperatures can present additional risks. Learn more about winter septic care in the guide below.

How Septic Tanks Work

While septic tanks are used in both rural and suburban areas, they're most commonly found in regions situated too far from municipal sewer systems and drain fields. A septic system is comprised of a large watertight container that is connected to your plumbing through a drainage line.

Wastewater, called effluent, flows from your home and into an underground chamber typically made of concrete, plastic, or fiberglass. Within the chamber, the effluent separates with solid materials falling to the bottom where they are broken down through biological decomposition.

Liquid wastewater exits the tank through the drain field where it’s pre-treated to remove viruses, contaminants, and harmful bacteria before trickling into the surrounding soil.

Preparing Your Tank for Winter

If your tank hasn't been pumped in at least three years, consider having it done before the weather changes to avoid emergency backups after the ground has frozen.

In the fall, avoid mowing the lawn around your drain field to insulate the area and reduce the risk of freezing. If you don't have a lawn, you can also protect your drain fields by spreading straw over the area to help it retain heat.

Regular use helps reduce the risk of freezing. However, if you will be out of town for an extended period, or if your home will be empty over the winter, consider shutting off the water supply and draining the lines completely before you leave.
