If you open the refrigerator and find everything inside is lukewarm instead of chilled, there are several possible explanations. Here are some troubleshooting tips to try before calling your local appliance service.

5 Troubleshooting Tips for a Refrigerator That Won’t Cool

1. Check the Plug & Thermostat

Pull the refrigerator from the wall to see if the power cord has loosened or fallen out. If you plug it back in and nothing changes, visit your circuit breaker panel to check for a flipped breaker needing activation.

Also, check the appliance’s temperature in case the thermostat was accidentally turned up. The ideal temperature range is between 35 and 37 degrees Fahrenheit.

2. Ensure the Appliance Is Level

If the fridge is uneven for any reason, its weighty door can open slightly and leak chilled air. If you don’t see the appliance leaning to one side, place a carpenter’s level on top to check for unevenness.

If you find an issue, adjust the fridge’s legs with adjustable pliers or a hex wrench, or use leveling materials such as small, thin pieces of lumber.

3. See If There’s a Circulation Problem

refrigeratorLook for anything blocking the interior vent that sends cold air between the refrigerator and the freezer. Rearrange food as needed; the vent is usually on a side or back wall.

Also, check the freezer for excessive frost buildup that causes vent blockages. If there’s a serious frost issue, turn the appliance off, take everything out, and keep the doors open so ice accumulations melt quickly.

4. Inspect the Door Gaskets

The gaskets must create a tight seal between the door and the rest of the appliance. Depending on the age of the fridge, they may be dry and brittle. Excessive food debris on the gaskets can also cause closing problems. Remove food debris or replace deteriorated gaskets if needed.

5. Clean the Condenser Coils

If the condenser coils become coated in debris, their efficiency declines and the air within the fridge warms. Use the brush attachment on your vacuum to remove dirt, hair, and dust from the coils.
