Cremation is becoming an increasingly popular option among Americans. The National Funeral Directors Association says that more than half of the people who pass in 2020 will be cremated, and that by 2040, that number will increase to 80%. Everything from concerns about costs to a desire for a non-traditional memorial service is driving the increase, but regardless of the reasons behind it, there are some aspects to consider when planning a cremation service.

What Should You Consider When Planning a Cremation Service?

1. Decide When Cremation Will Take Place

Determining when the cremation will take place will guide the type of service you plan. You have the option of a direct cremation, meaning that it takes place prior to a memorial, or to have the cremation done after the funeral. With the direct option, the remains will be present at the service. If you would like to have an open casket, or provide the opportunity for the family to say their goodbyes before the cremation, you’ll need to work with the funeral home to handle the arrangements.

2. Decide Where the Remains Will Be Located

Choosing to have a cremation provides you with a range of options for handling the remains. They can be buried, entombed, kept by loved ones, or scattered in a designated spot—or any combination of these ideas. Some people even opt for unconventional choices, such as turning them into jewelry or incorporating them into fireworks.

3. Choose a Ceremony Type

cremationCremation doesn’t mean that you cannot have a traditional funeral. You have additional options, including a memorial service, a celebration of life, or a scattering ceremony. A funeral director can help you make arrangements, including securing any necessary permits. If you plan to scatter ashes, confirm that the chosen location allows you to do so.

4. Select Ceremony Details

Once you’ve chosen the type of ceremony, select the details, including the music, readings, decor, and any rituals or religious traditions you wish to include. Personalize the ceremony as much as you wish, with photographs or other mementos.
