Under normal circumstances, you can expect a car battery to last about five years, but factors like extreme weather and infrequent driving can shorten its life. While a battery might die unexpectedly, there are usually signs that it might fail soon. Here are a few to look out for so you know when to replace it.

How to Know When Your Car Battery Is About to Die

1. Slow Starts

The older your car battery, the longer it takes to create the charge necessary to start the engine. When you notice it takes longer for the car to start, it’s time for a replacement.

2. Reduced Electrical Power

Watch for signs like dimming lights when you connect your phone; that usually means power is being diverted because there isn't enough to support everything.

3. Damaged Battery

If you suspect your car battery isn’t working as it should, pop the hood. Obvious signs to get a replacement include corrosion on the connectors, a misshapen battery case, or a rotten egg smell coming from under the hood, which indicates a leak. These issues show your battery is too old or damaged and you need a new one.

4. Check Engine Light

An illuminated check engine light can signal a battery issue. Check your owner’s manual to determine whether that’s the case for your car. Because this indicator can mean a number of issues, it’s a good idea to bring the car to an auto repair shop to uncover the source of the problem and have it repaired.
