No matter how diligent you are with oral care, you may still experience dental staining. Many products contain pigments and chemicals that cause stains. Luckily, Zoom® whitening is a safe and effective treatment provided by the dentist to brighten your smile and boost your confidence. Here’s more information about this procedure.

How Zoom® Whitening Works

This is an in-office procedure that bleaches the teeth using hydrogen peroxide gel and a special lamp controlled by your dentist. When activated by the light, the gel gently penetrates the teeth and breaks down, allowing oxygen to enter the enamel and dissolve stains.

The bleaching process lifts and lightens extrinsic discoloration, which occurs on the outer layer of the teeth. The treatment is gentle and usually completed in two hours or less, making it an excellent option for those who want to have a whiter smile after a single appointment.

What to Expect From the Procedure

Before the dentisttreatment, the dentist places a protective cover over your lips and gums so only your teeth are exposed. They then apply the hydrogen peroxide gel to the site and allow it to sit for about 15 minutes while a special lamp activates the solution.

After this period, the professional removes the gel and repeats the process up to three times, depending on the extent of the staining. Once the process is complete, the dentist applies a different gel (usually containing fluoride) to decrease any sensitivity.

You will be given a touch-up kit that will allow you to maintain your smile at home. You may experience tooth sensitivity for up to 48 hours after the treatment, so use a toothpaste designed for sensitive teeth to stay more comfortable during this period. For at least 72 hours, avoid eating or drinking coffee, tea, cola, wine, fruit juices, berries, and other dark-colored items that could interfere with the results.
