While you should never repair your hearing aid by yourself, Audiology Unlimited sees hearing aid issues every day that can easily be fixed. These simple issues require minimal effort to fix, and repairing them will further help your hearing protection. This will help your hearing aid last longer, sound better, and feel more comfortable in your ear.

If you come across the following hearing aid issues, here’s how to fix them:

  • Whistling or howling when inserted. Your hearing aid is not inserted properly. Remove and reinsert your hearing aid to fix this problem. If your hearing aid won’t fit due to an accumulation of ear wax, get your ear canal checked by a doctor.
  • No sound. This is the result of either a worn out battery or a clogged outlet or opening. Replace the battery with a fresh one, or clean the clogged outlet with a small brush. You may also need to change your wax filter.
  • Distorted sound. Often, the cause of distorted sound is a dirty or corroded battery. Corroded batteries can affect the battery contacts in your hearing aid. If this is the case, clean the battery contacts and replace the battery with a fresh one. Moisture can also cause a distorted sound or crackling in a hearing aid. Remove the battery and leave it in the open air overnight. If this does not solve the problem, try a hearing aid desiccant from your audiologist.

If the problems affecting your hearing aid are more serious than these, or if none of these repair tips fix your hearing aid, consult the hearing professionals at Audiology Unlimited.
