Log homes are beautiful. However, because they contain so much wood, they’re at a higher risk of fires. Here are some precautions to take to keep your property safe.

How to Prevent Home Fires

1. Trim Surrounding Growths

Wildfires are common in Montana. For example, two large fires consumed hundreds of thousands of acres in 2017.

Many log homes are located in areas with lush flora. While you can’t singlehandedly prevent wildfires, it’s possible to reduce the risk of property damage by pruning trees and shrubs. Trim back all wild vegetation to at least 100 feet away from the house.

2. Never Leave Flames Unattended

Cooking is a leading cause of house fires. Remain nearby when cooking and never leave an ignited stovetop unattended. Keep pets out of the kitchen when you're cooking to avoid accidents.

3. Use Grills Carefully

Embers and heat from outdoor grills can ignite wood. Fire flareups while cooking can also cause damage.

Keep barbecues at least 10 feet away from the house, and never leave charcoal or lighter fluid nearby while cooking. Put out coal with water after use to prevent it from burning.

4. Educate Children

On average, over 49,000 house fires per year occur due to children playing with matches or lighters. Therefore, it’s imperative to keep these devices secure.

Store them out of reach of children or in a locked cabinet. Teach your kids about the dangers of playing with flames and never allow them to light candles unsupervised.
