There are many reasons to incorporate an island when undertaking a kitchen remodeling project. This feature provides extra storage and workspace. It can also add additional seating underneath or include a sink, stovetop, or dishwasher. However, make sure to closely consider the island’s size and purpose with your contractor to ensure the final design fits seamlessly into the space.

A Guide to Incorporating a Kitchen Island

What Size Island Should You Pick?

A kitchen island takes up a lot of space. To prevent it from crowding the room, be realistic about the actual size of your kitchen. Even if you are making the room bigger, expect an island to take up at least 12 square feet.

Ideally, when planning the kitchen remodeling design, leave 4-by-2 feet of space for the island and an additional 3 feet of clearance space on all sides. If you do intend on having seating, this side of the island will need at least 2 extra feet of clearance to make room for the stools.

As for the island’s height, plan for it to align with your other countertop space. For most kitchens, this is 36 inches tall, but if you plan to use the space for dining, raise that to at least 42 inches.

What Purpose Will the Island Serve?

kitchen remodelingKnowing how much space is available for the island can help determine how the built-in fixture will function. Smaller islands are often better used for solitary purposes like providing extra workspace when cooking. The space could also serve as a snack station for your kids. It could be a comfortable dining area with a built-in microwave and drawers filled with easy-to-reach dining ware and snacks.

Also, kitchen remodeling must take into consideration where electrical outlets can be placed and where the plumbing is located. If you want to install a dishwasher under the island, make sure it can be easily connected to the drain pipes and will have a dedicated outlet.
