Wood stoves are a wonderful addition to any home, thanks to the unparalleled ambiance and warmth they bring to your space. If you plan to use one as a supplemental form of heat this winter, it is essential that you protect your family from the risk of carbon monoxide poisoning or sparking a house fire. Follow the guide below for safe enjoyment of your wood-burning stove.

Do:

Give it a fireproof buffer.

Place your stove on a fireproof base such as tile, masonry, or metal. Give it plenty of clearance—at least a couple of feet—with no combustible materials nearby, such as furniture, drapes, and floor rugs. When the stove is in use, it should have a spark screen in front of it to keep stray sparks from flying out and landing inside the home.

Have your chimney inspected and cleaned.

wood stovesIn an age where gas and electric stoves are popular, many homes have chimneys that are not designed for wood-burning fires. Before installing a new stove, have your chimney inspected to ensure it can accommodate a wood stove. Have it professionally cleaned every year to remove any blockages or creosote buildup inside the chimney, which is highly flammable and can spark a fire.

Don’t:

Use the wrong fuel.

Never start a fire with a flammable liquid, such as lighter fluid or gasoline. Use only dry and seasoned wood, with tinder such as wood flakes or newspaper to get the fire going. This will burn more cleanly, producing smoke that can be safely funneled up the chimney and out of the house without releasing harmful fumes.

Leave it unattended.

When you have a fire burning, never leave it unattended as you run an errand or go to sleep for the night. Let the flame burn down when you’re finished with it, then cut off the oxygen supply or sprinkle water over it until the fire is completely out. Poke around the ashes to check for glowing embers since even a small ember could spark a fire if left alone.
