Festive decorations are essential when you're celebrating the holiday season. Before decking the halls, take the time to properly clean the decor, especially if it's been sitting storage all year. To help ensure your seasonal accessories are looking their best, follow these tips.

How to Clean Holiday Decor After Storage

1. Fabric Items

Your mantle wouldn't be complete without traditional stockings, nor would your holiday table look right without festive linens. While table cloths, napkins, placemats, and runners can typically be machine washed on a delicate setting with mild detergent, always check the tags to make sure you're adhering to each item's specific needs.

Take extra care when cleaning fragile items, such as handmade quilts, pillow shams, and stockings. These items should either be hand washed or dry cleaned to protect delicate fabrics and embellishments.

2. Ornaments

storageDust and fingerprints can take the shine off of glass ornaments, making them look smudged or dull on your tree. To prevent this, use a microfiber cloth and ordinary glass cleaner to wipe the surface gently.

Glitter-covered ornaments can be challenging to clean, but if you find yours are dirty, use a feather duster and an equally light touch to wipe away any dust or debris. Wood, ceramic, plastic, and resin ornaments can be cleaned using a dry microfiber or lint-free cloth.

3. Greenery

Artificial trees, garlands, and wreaths can host cobwebs and dust, making them appear dingy and unattractive. To clean them, use the bristle attachment on your vacuum cleaner to lightly sweep away heavy accumulations of dust, and then wipe each bough with a cloth.

Artificial trees can also be cleaned with damp washcloths to restore vibrancy and remove stuck-on dust after storage. When using this method on pre-lit trees, make sure the tree is unplugged and avoid making contact with the lights. Then, ensure it’s completely dry before plugging it back in.
