The COVID-19 pandemic is creating unprecedented circumstances. For many, the fear of the unknown causes daily stress and anxiety. If you’re feeling isolated and unsure of the future, you aren’t alone. Here are three ways to cope with the unique stress brought on by the new coronavirus.

3 Tips for Dealing With Stress During in Quarantine

1. Take a Break From the Screens

Even before the pandemic, your free time may have been consumed by multiple social media platforms and app notifications. But during COVID-19, you’ll also be inundated with pandemic-related updates from these sites, from Facebook to the evening news.

With all the infection statistics, legislation changes, and memorial posts, it’s easy to feel defeated about the state of the world. Limit screen time to an hour a day, and take a day off completely when you’re feeling low. If you’re craving entertainment, turn to paperbacks, downloaded movies, and board games instead.

2. Exercise

anxietyAt least once a day, go for a walk around the neighborhood. Pick up the pace to raise your heart rate, and the body will start to release mood-boosting endorphins. If it’s raining or the sidewalks are crowded, put on an upbeat playlist and work out in the living room.

3. Share Your Feelings

Staying inside and keeping your social circle as small as possible can lead to anxiety and feelings of isolation or loneliness. Instead of sticking to texts and phone calls, ask a loved one for a video chat so that you can confide in them face-to-face.

You can also reach out to a professional counselor who you can talk to without judgment. If you have difficulty opening up on the spot, journal your feelings, then share the entry with the counselor during a telehealth appointment.
