With winter quickly approaching, seasonal maintenance is essential to ensure your heating system is working efficiently. Taking a proactive approach now not only ensures your home stays comfortable this winter but also helps you prevent potentially costly repairs down the road. Here are a few tips to prepare your HVAC system for the changing season.

3 Ways to Get Your Heater Ready for Winter

1. Change Your Air Filter

Changing the air filter will prolong the life of your heater while helping it operate more efficiently. It’s responsible for keeping debris out of the HVAC system, preventing blockages and reducing pollutants in your indoor air. Over time, dirt, dust, and other contaminants can build up on the air filter, bogging down the system and making it run less efficiently.

To prevent this, change the filter at the beginning and end of each season, then each month during periods of regular use.

2. Clean the Condenser Unit

heatingMost heating and cooling systems are comprised of two separate parts: the indoor unit, which supplies air to your home, and the condenser unit, which houses the essential components responsible for heating the air.

Because the condenser unit lives outside, it's susceptible to blockages of leaves, weeds, and other detritus, which can impede airflow. Clean your condenser unit by sweeping up leaves and debris, then vacuuming any dust or dirt. Use a garden hose to gently remove excess buildup from the outside of the unit.

3. Test Your Heater

Before winter arrives, ensure your heating system is running efficiently by testing your furnace and thermostat. While you may not want to run your heater when it's still warm outside, testing your heater early will let you know of any issues, so you won’t need to wait for a repairman in a cold house later in the year.

Set your thermostat to heat and allow it to run for 30 minutes. You can then determine whether the thermostat is functioning and the system is providing adequate heat.
